THE BOTANICAL NOTEBOOK

Identify the plant, not just the fragrance

Lavender, lavandin and spike lavender have different botanical identities even when their names appear similar. Essential oils can also differ according to the plant part and extraction process.

Check the botanical name, bottle size and whether the product is a pure essential oil or a prepared dilution. Concentrated botanicals are not automatically appropriate for every skin type.

FRAGRANCE FAMILIES

Understanding bright and grounding notes

Fragrance terminology often describes citrus as bright or fresh and woods or resins as warmer or deeper. These terms describe the sensory experience, not medical efficacy.

Some citrus essential oils can increase photosensitivity if applied to skin. Review the specific product's composition and label warnings, even when related oils have similar names.

WHAT GOES INTO A BLEND?

One name, several ingredients

Aromatic blends combine essential oils to create a particular scent. Each may contain a different combination of botanical ingredients, as well as a carrier or other base in some formulations.

Review the complete ingredient list and directions. Names suggesting relaxation or energy describe marketing intent and should not be mistaken for proof of treating a health condition.

USE WITH CARE

Dilution, diffusion & important cautions

Essential oils are concentrated substances. Do not swallow them or apply them undiluted to skin unless a product is expressly formulated and labelled for that use. Follow directions for carrier oil dilution and devices.

Use diffusers with ventilation and sensible exposure. Keep oils out of reach of children and pets; certain oils can be harmful to animals or inappropriate during pregnancy or with some medical conditions.
