Understand the SPF number and broad-spectrum label

SPF (sun protection factor) indicates tested protection against sunburn under specified conditions. Products can differ in their SPF rating, formulation, water resistance and directions. Broad-spectrum sunscreen helps protect against both UVA and UVB radiation.

Cancer Council Australia recommends SPF 50 or SPF 50+, broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen as part of a combination of sun-protection measures. Check the specific product's current label rather than assuming that every product in this collection has the same specifications.

Read Cancer Council NSW sunscreen guidance.

SHADE & APPLICATION

Tinted sunscreen still needs proper coverage

A tinted sunscreen combines a visible pigment or colour with sunscreen ingredients. The tint changes its appearance but does not remove the need to apply enough product to obtain the labelled sun protection.

Cosmetic finishes, shades and pack sizes can vary widely. Follow the sunscreen directions, especially when layering makeup, and do not treat a thin cosmetic layer as automatically equivalent to the recommended sunscreen amount.

FAMILY SUN SAFETY

Shade, clothing and age-appropriate sunscreen

Children need comprehensive sun protection, including appropriate shade, clothing and a hat. A product being labelled for babies does not mean sunscreen should replace shade and protective clothing for infants.

For babies under six months, routine sunscreen use is generally not recommended; seek individual advice from a doctor or pharmacist where needed. Always follow manufacturer age guidance and check that a product suits the child.

Apply enough, reapply, then care for the skin

Use your sunscreen exactly as directed and in conjunction with clothing, shade, a suitable hat and sunglasses. Cancer Council NSW recommends applying sunscreen before outdoor exposure and reapplying at least every two hours and after swimming, sweating or towel drying.

Sticks and lip products may be useful for particular areas but require suitable application. After-sun milk is a moisturising product, not a substitute for sunscreen or medical care for significant sunburn. If the skin is badly burned or symptoms are severe, seek medical advice.
