THE INGREDIENT NOTEBOOK

Vitamin C formulas are not all the same

Vitamin C appears in skincare in different forms, concentrations and product bases. A formula can also include other ingredients that influence its texture, stability and how it fits into a daily routine.

Do not judge a formula by the front-label claim alone. Check the complete ingredient list, directions and packaging information; introduce new active products gradually if your skin is sensitive.

BEYOND THE LABEL

Niacinamide, antioxidants & other skincare ingredients

Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3 found in some skincare products. Other formulas focus on plant extracts or combinations of ingredients described as antioxidants.

The wording “antioxidant” does not tell you how a finished serum will perform for every person. What matters is the full formulation, how it is used and what evidence supports its particular claims.

CHOOSE YOUR TEXTURE

Water-based serum or facial oil?

Products called serums can be lightweight aqueous formulations, emulsions or oil-based preparations. They may differ markedly in viscosity and how they feel alongside a moisturiser.

Face oils are often applied in small amounts as part of a moisturising routine; some people prefer to use them after a water-based product. Follow the manufacturer's guidance and consider your own skin comfort rather than assuming more layers are always better.

YOUR ROUTINE, YOUR PACE

Layering serums without overcomplicating skincare

A practical skincare routine can begin with cleansing, a suitable serum if desired, and moisturising. During daytime, appropriate sun protection is important; a serum is not a replacement for sunscreen.

When using active ingredients, follow product instructions, avoid introducing several strong new formulas simultaneously and watch for redness or stinging. Persistent skin concerns may benefit from advice from a qualified health professional.
