THE LEAF EDIT

Why different leaves make different infusions

Herbal infusions vary with the plant species, growing conditions, cut size and preparation. Fragrant leaves such as peppermint and lemon balm have different aromas and flavours from nettle or raspberry leaf.

Read the botanical ingredient list and follow the tea supplier's directions for the amount of herb, water temperature and steeping time. Similar plant names can refer to different preparations.

FLOWERS & PETALS

The quiet beauty of floral tea

Flower-based herbal teas may use whole flower heads, petals or small blossoms. Chamomile, calendula and lavender are familiar examples, while butterfly pea flowers can give an infusion a striking natural colour.

Botanical ingredients may be blended with leaves or roots to create a particular flavour. Check the full list and allergen information, especially if you have sensitivities to flowering plants.

ROOTS, ROASTED OR RAW

Preparation can make a meaningful difference

Roots and other firmer plant parts are sometimes prepared differently from delicate leaves or petals. Depending on the product, instructions may call for a longer steep or a simmered decoction.

Roasted dandelion root and raw dandelion root are different presentations of the same plant material. Always follow the instructions supplied for each product rather than applying one brewing method to every herb.

Brewing with care, choosing with curiosity

Loose-leaf herbal ingredients, tea bags and ready-made blends can all fit a personal tea ritual. Check whether a blend contains caffeine, spices, sweeteners or concentrated botanical ingredients alongside the headline herb.

Herbal teas are not automatically appropriate for everyone. Pregnancy, certain medicines and health conditions can change suitability, particularly with concentrated or less familiar herbs. Read the label and seek qualified advice where needed.
