Probiotics & Prebiotic Fibre: A Practical Buying Guide

Making sense of probiotics and prebiotics

Probiotic shelves can seem complicated: different strains, amounts, formats and storage directions. This guide explains the details worth checking so you can compare products confidently.

Probiotics versus prebiotics

Probiotics contain live microorganisms identified by their genus, species and, ideally, strain. Prebiotics are ingredients selectively used by microorganisms; many are types of dietary fibre. Some products combine both. These categories are not interchangeable.

What to check before you buy

1. Which microorganisms and strains are listed?

Two probiotic products can list different combinations of microorganisms. Where a strain identifier is provided, it can be useful for researching the particular formula. A general “probiotic blend” description is less specific.

2. What quantity is stated, and when is it guaranteed?

Some labels use CFU (colony-forming units). A higher number is not automatically the best choice; the product's particular strains, formulation and labelled directions also matter. Check whether amounts apply at manufacture or through the expiry date.

3. What format works for you?

Capsules, sachets, powders, drops and food-based preparations have different directions. Consider portion size, ease of use and storage. Some probiotic products need refrigeration, while others are shelf stable — follow the label.

4. Is fibre included?

Look for prebiotic ingredients such as partially hydrolysed guar gum (PHGG), inulin or other fibres where listed. Start with label directions and consider whether you already use fibre supplements.

Frequently asked questions

Is the product with the most CFU always better?

Not necessarily. CFU is one product characteristic, not a simple quality ranking. Compare the strains, storage conditions, label information and suitability for your circumstances.

Do all probiotics have to be refrigerated?

No. Storage requirements are product-specific. Always check the packaging and follow any refrigeration or temperature instructions.

Can I take more than one microbiome product?

Check for duplicate ingredients and overlapping directions. Ask your pharmacist or healthcare practitioner if you're unsure, particularly if you have a medical condition or take medications.

Shopping information only. Products differ in ingredients, intended uses and directions. Check each product label and any professional-use restrictions. For personal health concerns, pregnancy, breastfeeding, prescription medicines or ongoing symptoms, seek advice from an appropriately qualified health professional.
